☘️Notre Dame Sports
🏈Football - Fakatou Lands in Columbus Today, Sesay Timeline Firms Up
Today's the day for the most-watched OV of the spring. 5-star DL Marcus Fakatou arrives in Columbus this morning for his Ohio State official visit (May 29-31). What's new since yesterday: his full June calendar is now locked in - Texas June 5-7, Oregon June 12-14, then Notre Dame June 15-17 in the closing slot. He skipped the previously-rumored Georgia trip. Wiltfong and Gorney's predictions still point Columbus, with Larry Johnson the gravitational pull. Notre Dame's job is to make this a real decision by mid-June rather than a Buckeye coronation.
Sesay's June timeline is now public. 5-star EDGE Abraham Sesay (Downingtown East, PA) confirmed to Irish Sports Daily his final four - Notre Dame, LSU, Duke, Florida State - with a decision expected sometime in June, possibly during one of his four OVs. The current read: ND is "the assumed leader" but Penn State has been pushing hard on the home front (the only finalist not in the official-visit slate is the in-state Lions, which says something). If Sesay commits at South Bend, Notre Dame's 2027 defensive line class - Vaughn, O'Neil, Folorunsho, Flanagan, plus Sesay - would arguably be the best in the country.
Two other small notes. Monsanna Torbert's June 19-21 OV at Notre Dame is still on (the former Indiana CB pledge); Mickens has the close. And the 2026 single-game tickets go on sale to the general public Thursday, June 4 - the Lambeau opener vs. Wisconsin is the obvious one, but the Michigan State night game (Sept. 19) and Miami (Nov. 7) are also primetime.
Upcoming:
- Fri-Sun May 29-31 - Marcus Fakatou OV at Ohio State
- Thu Jun 4 - 2026 single-game tickets on sale to general public
- June 11-13 - Julius Jones Jr. (WR, legacy) OV at Notre Dame
- June 15-17 - Marcus Fakatou OV at Notre Dame (closing slot)
- June 19-21 - Monsanna Torbert (CB) OV at Notre Dame
- June 23 - Julius Jones Jr. commitment announcement
- Sun Sep 6 - vs. Wisconsin, Shamrock Series at Lambeau Field (7:30 p.m. ET, NBC/Peacock)
Last Result: Blue-Gold Game - Blue 41, Gold 40 (Sat Apr 25).
🏀Women's Basketball - Preseason Top-10 Buzz Builds
The way-too-early rankings are landing. USA TODAY has the Irish at No. 8 nationally in its 2026-27 preview; On3's preseason poll dropped today with Notre Dame at No. 15 (a more cautious read, weighted toward last year's Elite Eight ceiling). The split is the same conversation either way: with Hannah Hidalgo back for her senior year and a top-3 recruiting class incoming (5-stars Jacy Abii and Jenica Lewis lead it), this team has the talent to make the Final Four for the first time since Olivia Miles' freshman year. The question is depth around Hidalgo - who graduated to the WNBA, who's stepping up, and whether Niele Ivey gets the post production she needs.
A reminder of the recap from last week if you missed it: Hidalgo closes 2025-26 with the NCAA single-season steals record (202), three-time Wooden Award All-American (a program first), and Naismith DPOY.
Upcoming: Niele Ivey leads Team USA U18 at FIBA AmeriCup June 8-14 (Mexico). 2026-27 season opens Nov. 1 at the Eternal City Tip-off in Rome (Fox/FS1).
🥍Lacrosse - Sanders Enters Portal
One offseason move on the women's side. Midfielder Marleigh Sanders entered the transfer portal this month, per USA Lacrosse's early portal tracker - the first notable departure for the women's program coming off their season. No destination yet. For the men, no fresh movement; Corrigan's reload effort is built around junior defenseman Shawn Lyght (ACC Co-DPOY, Tewaaraton finalist), and the 2027 schedule features 11 games, five at Arlotta, eight of 11 opponents ranked top-15 preseason.
Last Result (men): Lost 16-9 to No. 1 Princeton in NCAA Championship (Mon May 25).
🔴Utah Utes
🏈Football - June 5 OV Slate Grows, Quiet Day Otherwise
The June 5 weekend keeps getting bigger. Two more names firmed up since the last briefing: Kelvin Eiwo (OL) and Josh Christensen (EDGE) are both confirmed for the same Memorial-weekend-after slate alongside Tye Kennedy (OL, top-6), Tiki Teeples (DT commit), and Cam Pettijohn (LB). That's four trench pieces in one weekend - exactly the room Scalley needs to rebuild after losing two first-round NFL offensive linemen. Kennedy decides July 1 between Utah, Cal, Arizona State, Michigan, Washington, and Minnesota.
Nothing else on the wire today - the lull between spring evals and the June visit cycle is real. Worth noting: Avery Neff just took home WCGA Regional Gymnast of the Year for Region 2 in the postseason awards (gymnastics, not football, but it surfaced in the Utah feed yesterday) - eight-time All-American, 27 wins this season, 35 career.
Upcoming:
- June 5 - Kennedy, Teeples, Pettijohn, Eiwo, Christensen OVs
- June 12 - Ben Rainwater (2027 OL) OV
- June 21 - Jag Ioane (DE) OV
- Thu Sept 3 - vs. Idaho, Rice-Eccles (Scalley's HC debut)
- Sept 12 - vs. Arkansas (Rice-Eccles)
🤸Gymnastics - Neff Adds Regional Honor
One late postseason add. Avery Neff was named WCGA Region 2 Gymnast of the Year, capping a year that also produced Big 12 Gymnast of the Year, team MVP, three perfect 10s (vault at Sprouts, vault vs. Southern Utah, bars vs. BYU), and a 7th AA / 4th floor finish at NCAAs as an individual qualifier. She enters 2027 as the unambiguous centerpiece of a Utah team that finished 10th nationally and missed the NCAA Championship by 0.125 - ending the program's 49-year streak at nationals. Coaching staff is intact: bars coach Steve Arkell (joined April), Olympic silver medalist Grace McCallum as Student Assistant, Carly Dockendorf extended through 2031.
Upcoming: 2027 season opens January.
🌰Ohio State Buckeyes
🏈Football - Fakatou Weekend Begins, Sayin Hypes the New Offense
Fakatou is in Columbus. The three-day OV runs through Sunday. Wiltfong and Gorney's predictions still both point Ohio State, and Fakatou recently told Rivals the Buckeyes are "No. 1" on his list. Larry Johnson is the differentiator. 2027 RB David Gabriel-Georges is also in for his OV, and Benny Easter Jr. joins the official-visit weekend alongside recent commit Prince Goldsby. Worth noting: a second elite DT who was supposed to be in town this weekend canceled days ago and is now trending toward Notre Dame/Oregon - so the focus narrows to Fakatou as the headline name.
QB1 hypes the new offense. Julian Sayin spoke this week about Arthur Smith's first offseason as OC, saying Smith has brought "a lot of great things" and that "the whole program has a chip on our shoulder" coming off how 2025 ended (12-2, primetime loss left a mark). Sayin enters Year 2 as a redshirt sophomore - the second-year jump is the question for whether this team gets back to the playoff.
Stadium update: new turf install at Ohio Stadium is underway for the fall. Silver sleeve stripes back on home and away uniforms. Sept. 5 vs. Ball State opens at 12:30 on BTN as previously noted.
Upcoming:
- Fri-Sun May 29-31 - Marcus Fakatou + David Gabriel-Georges + Benny Easter Jr. OVs
- Sept 5 - vs. Ball State (12:30 p.m., BTN)
- Sept 12 - at Texas (7:30 p.m., ABC)
- Sept 19 - vs. Kent State (noon, FOX)
🏔️Treasure Valley
🍽️Food & Drink
Nothing brand-new on the openings calendar since yesterday - the May wave (Descanso on the Greenbelt, The STIL + Bumble Coffee, Vessel Kitchen, Deli George, Solovey Kitchen Cafe in Nampa) is the active set. The next opening to watch is Spitfire Tacos + Tequila at The Boardwalk in Garden City - soft open late May, official opening June 2.

Saturday cools slightly into the mid-70s for the long run.
