βοΈNotre Dame Sports
πFootball
The 2027 trench haul keeps stacking. Beyond last week's headline-grabbing David Folorunsho commit (5-star DL, No. 9 overall), the Irish also landed composite five-star OL Oluwasemilore Olubobola (St. Peter's Prep, NJ - top-20 national prospect, chose ND over Miami and Texas A&M) and flipped developmental OL Jackson Hill from UCLA. The 2027 class has now moved up to No. 3 nationally in the latest update - a notch better than the No. 5 figure floating around last week. Folorunsho is also the first signature get for new DL coach Charlie Partridge, beating out Georgia, Miami, Michigan, and Texas Tech.
Two more 2027 decisions on the radar: OL Layton Von Brandt was due May 18 (no public announcement surfaced yet), and DE Jackson Vaughn is set to announce May 26. On the roster side, Purdue transfer kicker Spencer Porath is in for 2026 and lines up as the likely starter. No fresh Marcus Freeman / CJ Carr quotes this week - summer workouts are the next milestone before fall camp.
Upcoming:
- Sun Sep 6 - vs. Wisconsin, Shamrock Series at Lambeau Field (season opener)
Last Result: Blue-Gold Game - Blue 41, Gold 40 (Sat Apr 25)
πWomen's Basketball
No news to report! Here's recent information in case you missed a previous newsletter:
Hannah Hidalgo's "Run It Back" remains the program's load-bearing decision. The reigning Naismith Defensive Player of the Year averaged 25.3 / 6.9 / 5.2 / 5.6 (points, rebounds, assists, steals) - the only DI player since 1999-00 to clear β₯25/5/5/5 over a full season. Around her: portal additions Anaya Hardy (Louisville) and Madison "Nat" St. Rose (Princeton) plus a No. 1 HS class headlined by McDonald's All-Americans Jacy Abii and Jenica Lewis. Coach Niele Ivey leads Team USA's U18 squad at the FIBA AmeriCup June 8-14 in Mexico.
Upcoming: Season opener - Eternal City Tip-off Nov. 1 on Fox.
π₯Lacrosse
Semifinal field is fully set, and it's Princeton vs. Duke on the other side. No. 1 Princeton 14, No. 8 Penn State 10 Sunday at Delaware Stadium (the Tigers ripped off the final five goals of the day), and No. 4 Duke 16, Georgetown 6 in the other quarterfinal (Max Sloat 4G, Buck Cunningham 10 saves). So Memorial Day weekend in Charlottesville is #2 Notre Dame vs. #6 Syracuse in one semi and #1 Princeton vs. #4 Duke in the other.
The Irish already have a Syracuse blueprint from the regular season - a 16-11 win in late April in South Bend where ND held the Orange to just three second-half goals and got eight different scorers. The threats Saturday are clear: senior Finn Thomson (15 goals in his last five) and Maryland-product Joey Spallina for Syracuse; Josh Yago (4G/3A in the quarterfinal) leading the way for ND. A defensive stat to lean on: Notre Dame has won 56 straight games when holding opponents under 10 goals.
Upcoming:
- Sat May 23 - Men's NCAA Semifinal vs. No. 6 Syracuse, 2:30 p.m. ET on ESPN2 (Scott Stadium, Charlottesville)
- Mon May 25 - Men's NCAA Championship Final (if advance), Memorial Day, ESPN (Charlottesville)
Last Result: Men beat Johns Hopkins 15-9 in NCAA Quarterfinal (Sat May 16).
βΎBaseball - Tournament Opens Tonight
No. 10 Notre Dame vs. No. 15 Clemson, 5 p.m. ET tonight, Truist Field, Charlotte (ACCN). Pitching matchup per the official ND preview: RHP Jack Radel (ND) vs. LHP Michael Sharman (Clemson). Radel is a First Team All-ACC pick with 108 K's (13th nationally) and two complete games on the year - including a complete-game shutout against Clemson in March's three-game sweep at home. Recently he threw 6.0 perfect innings on 68 pitches at UCF.
At the plate, watch catcher Mark Quatrani (Second Team All-ACC, .320/8 HRs in ACC play, named Buster Posey Award semifinalist yesterday) and DH/UTL Bino Watters (First Team All-ACC, .339 in conference). Both got those awards Monday. The Irish enter on the best 12-game stretch of any team in the country (11-1) and just hung 21 runs and seven home runs on Pitt in the regular-season finale. Win-and-advance bracket - next round is Virginia Tech in the quarterfinals.
πAround the Program
- Track & Field: Okeke earned All-ACC honors in discus as the Irish closed out the 2026 ACC Outdoor Championships (May 17).
- Softball: Season ended at 25-28 (11-13 ACC) - not in NCAA Regionals.
π΄Utah Utes
πFootball
The 2027 class quietly added its first running back last week: Jonah Mailei (Skyline HS, Salt Lake City) committed Wednesday May 13, picking Utah over Oregon State, Boise State, San Diego State, and Northern Arizona. Mailei rushed for 1,215 yards (6.4 ypc) and 12 TDs as a junior. Notable family note - his dad Marcus Mailei is a Super Bowl XLIV champion (Saints, fullback) and Weber State alum, so this is a built-in Mountain West tie. Mailei is Scalley's fourth 2027 commit and first at the position.
That's the only fresh item. The late-May visit weekend bringing ~50 prospects for Scalley's first 2027 class should produce a wave of news later this week.
Upcoming:
- Sept. 3 - vs. Idaho (season opener, Rice-Eccles)
- Sept. 26 - at Iowa State (Big 12 opener)
π€ΈGymnastics
No news to report! Here's recent information in case you missed a previous newsletter:
Utah finished 2026 10th nationally, missing the NCAA Championship by 0.125 at the Corvallis Regional Final - first time in 51 years the Red Rocks didn't make nationals. Avery Neff Big 12 Gymnast of the Year; Ana Padurariu Big 12 Specialist of the Year. USA National Team coach Steve Arkell joined as bars coach (April 30); Olympic silver medalist Grace McCallum is on as Student Assistant. Deseret's May 1 retrospective called 2026 "did not go as planned" but framed the Red Rocks as "very dangerous" heading into 2027 with Neff returning.
Upcoming: 2027 season begins in January.
βΎBaseball - Big 12 Tournament Opens Tonight
No. 10 Utah vs. No. 11 Kansas State, 8 p.m. MT (10 p.m. ET) tonight, Surprise Stadium, ESPN+. Single-elim opener; winner draws No. 7 TCU on Wednesday. Per Deseret News, Utah will likely start either Colter McAnelly (6.82 ERA) or Payton Riske (6.15 ERA) - no announcement yet. The Utes enter at 24-26 (12-18 Big 12).
The bats are the story: Jake Long .369/11 HR/56 RBI, Jet Gilliam .368/6 HR, Cameron Gurney .356/7 HR/48 RBI - though Gurney's availability is questionable after exiting Saturday's game with an injury. Utah's pitching is league-worst-ish (6.65 team ERA, second-worst in the Big 12), and K-State's isn't much better at 6.10 - Deseret flatly predicted "a high-scoring affair." The teams' only series this year (late March) gave Utah 13-11 and 16-14 wins around an 8-5 K-State victory, so the offensive blueprint matches.
πAround the Program
- Track & Field (women): Utah closed its Big 12 Outdoor Championship run in Tucson (May 14-16) - 17 athletes including 13 first-timers. No team-finish summary in free sources yet.
π°Ohio State Buckeyes
πFootball
Fresh recruiting news: four-star DE Wyatt Smith (6-6, 245, St. Thomas Aquinas, Fort Lauderdale) committed Sunday May 17, becoming the 12th pledge in the 2027 class. Smith - No. 78 overall and No. 11 edge in the cycle - chose OSU over Missouri (where his father played), Notre Dame, and Indiana. He joins five-star DJ Jacobs as the second edge in the class; the group remains headlined by Jacobs and five-star WR Jamier Brown.
Less rosy on the QB depth front: UCLA (under new HC Bob Chesney) is pushing hard on 2027 QB commit Brady Edmunds, the 6-5 California prospect who has slipped to the No. 18 QB in the 247 Composite since his December 2024 commitment. Edmunds has reportedly been on UCLA's campus repeatedly and is "keeping his options open" - proximity to home is the factor. OSU already lost Champ Monds to Notre Dame, so the QB room thins quickly behind Julian Sayin and Tavien St. Clair if Edmunds flips.
Upcoming:
- Sept 5 - vs. Ball State (season opener)
- Sept 12 - at Texas, 7:30 p.m. ABC
- Nov 28 - vs. Michigan, noon FOX
βΎBaseball - Big Ten Tournament Opens Tonight
No. 6 Ohio State vs. No. 11 Washington, 10 p.m. ET tonight, Charles Schwab Field, Omaha (BTN). First Big Ten Tournament appearance since 2024 - earned by sweeping Michigan in Ann Arbor (first sweep there since 1994) to vault from last place into the sixth seed. Reg-season record 29-23 (18-12 B1G).
Washington took two of three in the regular-season series, with each game decided by one run and two going to extras - the most competitive series OSU played all year. No starting pitcher was announced in the materials available this morning (the official OSU preview hadn't been populated when I checked). A win likely sets up a second-round meeting with No. 7 Michigan or No. 10 Rutgers.
πAround the Program
- Men's basketball: Three roster moves: F Andrija Jelavic transferred in from Kentucky (2 years left); G Curtis Givens III committed after a year at Memphis (9.4 ppg); G John Mobley Jr. withdrew from the NBA Draft, returns for his junior year (15.7 ppg, 41% from three as a sophomore).
- Men's lacrosse: Season ended in the B1G quarterfinals - No. 9 OSU lost 11-8 to No. 5 Michigan in late April.
