☘️Notre Dame Sports
🥍Lacrosse - Two Days to the Semifinal
Saturday, 2:30 p.m. ET on ESPN2 - Notre Dame vs. Syracuse in Charlottesville. This is the headline storyline of the personal-side week. Same matchup ND won 16-11 in South Bend on April 25, but the stakes are obviously different now.
Both sides' pre-game framing centered on Josh Yago. The grad-student attackman went for 4 goals and 3 assists in the 15-9 quarterfinal over Johns Hopkins, and Syracuse will almost certainly devote a pole to him. ND's supporting cast - eight different scorers in the April win - has to step up if that defensive look holds. On Syracuse's end, the player to watch is attackman Finn Thomson: three goals in each of the Orange's two tournament wins so far, and 15 goals over his last five games.
Some larger context if it matters: ND won back-to-back national titles in 2023 and 2024. A third in four years and the "dynasty" word starts to feel earned. Syracuse, despite 10 program titles, hasn't won one since 2009 and hasn't been to the title game since 2013. Different pressures on each sideline.
Upcoming:
- Sat May 23 - Men's NCAA Semifinal vs. No. 6 Syracuse, 2:30 p.m. ET on ESPN2 (Scott Stadium, Charlottesville)
- Mon May 25 - Men's NCAA Championship Final (if advance), Memorial Day, ESPN
Last Result: Men beat Johns Hopkins 15-9 in NCAA Quarterfinal (Sat May 16).
⚾Baseball - Season Over
The Hokies hit ND off the field. Virginia Tech 17, Notre Dame 10 in the ACC Tournament second round at Truist Field. ND actually jumped out 4-0 in the top of the first - Mark Quatrani's 410-foot home run plus a Jamie Zee sac fly - but VT racked up 19 hits against 10 different Notre Dame pitchers. Hokies leadoff hitter Ethan Ball had a stat line worth printing: 2-for-2, two HRs, two walks, two HBPs, three RBIs, four runs scored. That's a one-man wrecking crew.
That's the season. Notre Dame finishes its ACC tournament run at 1-1 and the bigger postseason picture closes here.
🏈Football
A small but real recruiting day. DT David Folorunsho (Chicago St. Patrick) picked Notre Dame over Miami and Texas Tech - a Chicago-native interior defensive line addition to the 2026 class. Less welcome: 2027 4-star OT Layton von Brandt committed to Auburn over Notre Dame, Florida, and Penn State. He'd been the OL target ND was tracking closely; that one stings.
Looking forward, DE Jackson Vaughn still has his decision date locked for next Tuesday, May 26 - ND is widely seen as the lead. And there's a new name on the board: 4-star CB Monsanna Torbert decommitted from Indiana, and ND is in the mix to add him.
ND's 2026 class still sits at 27 commitments, the program's best haul this century by Composite ranking.
Upcoming:
- Tue May 26 - Jackson Vaughn (4-star DE) commitment announcement
- Sun Sep 6 - vs. Wisconsin, Shamrock Series at Lambeau Field (season opener, 7:30 p.m. ET, NBC/Peacock)
Last Result: Blue-Gold Game - Blue 41, Gold 40 (Sat Apr 25)
🏀Women's Basketball
No news to report! Here's recent information in case you missed a previous newsletter:
Hannah Hidalgo's "Run It Back" remains the program's load-bearing decision. The reigning Naismith Defensive Player of the Year and Nancy Lieberman Award winner (best point guard in the country) is back for another year - last season she put up roughly 24 / 5 / 5 / 4-plus across the board. Around her: a recruiting class ESPN ranks No. 5 nationally, headlined by McDonald's All-Americans Jacy Abii and Jenica Lewis. Niele Ivey leads Team USA's U18 squad at the FIBA AmeriCup June 8-14 in Mexico. ESPN's way-too-early 2026-27 women's top 25 has ND comfortably in the contender tier.
Upcoming: Season opener - Eternal City Tip-off Nov. 1 on Fox.
🔴Utah Utes
🏈Football
A 2027 recruiting day, all about visits. Top-30 interior OL Gecova Doyal has trimmed his list to four - Utah, UCLA, Oregon, Washington - and is on campus for an official visit the weekend of May 29-31. OL coach Jordan Gross gets the reset there. Also on the offensive line trail: 3-star OL Tye Kennedy (Arizona) visits Utah the weekend of June 5, with finalists including Cal, ASU, Michigan, Washington, Utah, and Minnesota. Kennedy's decision date is July 1.
Utah's 2027 class is still light at the OL position - no commitments yet there. The next two weekends are the swing.
Upcoming:
- Sept. 3 - vs. Idaho (season opener, Rice-Eccles)
- Sept. 26 - at Iowa State (Big 12 opener)
🤸Gymnastics
No news to report! Here's recent information in case you missed a previous newsletter:
Utah finished 2026 10th nationally, missing the NCAA Championship by 0.125 at the Corvallis Regional Final - first time in 51 years the Red Rocks didn't make nationals. Avery Neff was Big 12 Gymnast of the Year; Ana Padurariu was Big 12 Specialist of the Year. USA National Team coach Steve Arkell joined as bars coach (April 30); Olympic silver medalist Grace McCallum signed on as Student Assistant. Deseret framed the 2027 group as "very dangerous" with Neff returning.
Upcoming: 2027 season begins in January.
🌰Ohio State Buckeyes
🏈Football
Light day on football headlines. The 2027 board is the active story: RB David Gabriel-Georges is back in Columbus May 29 for his official visit after three prior unofficials. He's a high-upside target. Earlier in the week's carryover items: 4-star DE Wyatt Smith flipped to OSU (over ND, Mizzou, and Indiana) on Sunday, and UCLA is still circling QB commit Brady Edmunds behind the scenes.
Upcoming:
- Sept 5 - vs. Ball State (season opener)
- Sept 12 - at Texas, 7:30 p.m. ABC
- Nov 28 - vs. Michigan, noon FOX
⚾Baseball - Stayed Alive
Ohio State 3, Rutgers 2 in the Big Ten Tournament elimination game in Omaha. Pierce Herrenbruck threw a nine-inning complete game - the first complete game in this tournament in two years. That's the line that jumps off the page. The Buckeyes survive and move on to the loser of Iowa/Maryland today, still in double-elimination format.
