🌅Personal Briefing - Friday, May 22, 2026

Good morning. Here's your personal read.

🏃Training

🏃Today's Plan

🎯 10K - 2026-06-20 (29 days out) Phase: build → taper starts 2026-06-15 (24 days) This week: Two hard days (Monday tempo, Wednesday intervals) plus a Saturday long run; everything else easy. Next week: Finish taper and race-week shakeouts. Why today: Mon tempo and Wed intervals build race-specific fitness for the 10K; Sat long run builds durability; easy days protect the work. After this: Half Marathon on 2026-10-11 (142 days out)

🏃 Today (Friday): 22-min easy run · 8-min abs · 5-min stretch Target pace: 9:30–10:00/mi (Z2, conversational) Rest was already taken Wed 05-20 - Friday is a normal easy day. Z2 balance at 43% (build target ≥60%) - keep it easy today to rebuild the ratio.

Best window: Lunch - 74°F, sunny, wind 4 mph

📊This Week

Sat: 54-min easy run · 5-min abs · 8-min stretch · pace 9:30–10:00/mi - long run day - 48 min easy Sun: 22-min easy run · 8-min abs · 5-min stretch · pace 9:30–10:00/mi - keep the easy base going

This week: 4 runs · 9.0 mi · 76 min Zone check: 43% in pace-Z2 (build target ≥60%). Recent easy paces: 9:11/mi, 11:27/mi, 9:25/mi. If those feel conversational, they may be fine - pace zones are proxies. HR data from the COROS will clarify your true zones once it's set up.

Recent runs:

  • Sat 05-16 · 3.7 mi · 42 min · 11:27/mi (easy)
  • Sun 05-17 · 2.3 mi · 21 min · 9:25/mi (easy)
  • Mon 05-18 · 2.8 mi · 22 min · 7:40/mi (Z4)
  • Tue 05-19 · 2.6 mi · 22 min · 8:26/mi (Z3)
  • Thu 05-21 · 1.3 mi · 11 min · 8:20/mi (Z3)

✓ Nice walk yesterday (17 min). 4 family walks this week - lifestyle win, not a run substitute.

☘️Notre Dame Sports

🥍Lacrosse - Semifinal Tomorrow

This is the day before. No. 2 Notre Dame vs No. 6 Syracuse, tomorrow (Sat May 23) at 2:30 p.m. ET on ESPN2 from Scott Stadium in Charlottesville. Winner plays Monday for the title.

A few details worth holding onto going in. The all-time series is dead even at 12-12, but ND has won 11 of the last 15 meetings - including the 16-11 win in South Bend on April 25. ND is 12-2 on the season and 11-1 in their last four NCAA tournament appearances, with eight of those wins by five-plus goals. Their defense is fifth nationally at 8.57 goals allowed per game.

The Notre Dame names you'll hear most: Shawn Lyght is the Tewaaraton finalist on defense - first defenseman in a decade to earn the honor - and back-to-back ACC Co-Defensive Player of the Year. He'll draw Syracuse's top attackman. Thomas Ricciardelli is ACC Goalie of the Year with a 57.9% save percentage (fifth nationally). Josh Yago leads the offense with 47 points in 13 games, and is coming off a 4-goal, 3-assist quarterfinal against Hopkins.

The "dynasty" framing is real if ND wins out: a third national title in four years, on top of the back-to-back in 2023 and 2024. Syracuse hasn't won one since 2009.

Upcoming:

  • Sat May 23 - Men's NCAA Semifinal vs. No. 6 Syracuse, 2:30 p.m. ET on ESPN2 (Scott Stadium, Charlottesville)
  • Mon May 25 - Men's NCAA Championship Final (if advance), Memorial Day, ESPN

Last Result: Men beat Johns Hopkins 15-9 in NCAA Quarterfinal (Sat May 16).

🏈Football

A couple of new threads. Marcus Freeman addressed the "really loud" NFL rumors swirling around him - message was a reaffirmation of his commitment to the program. Coming off the offseason coaching market and into recruiting season, that's the kind of clarification that quiets things down for now.

On the 2027 trail: ND is making a strong push for top-100 QB Neimann Lawrence, and 4-star EDGE Darieon Prescott has been signaling "feels at home" energy on his ND visits. Both fit the priority board that emerged after the Layton von Brandt miss to Auburn. Elite DL Marcus Fakatou (Sierra Canyon, CA) is locked in for a June 15-17 return visit to South Bend, after a tour through Ohio State, Georgia, Texas, and Oregon. He's a difference-maker if ND lands him.

Jackson Vaughn's commitment is still on the calendar for Tuesday May 26 - reclassified to 2027, EDGE out of Bergen Catholic (NJ), and ND is the widely projected destination.

Upcoming:

  • Tue May 26 - Jackson Vaughn (EDGE) commitment announcement
  • Sun Sep 6 - vs. Wisconsin, Shamrock Series at Lambeau Field (season opener, 7:30 p.m. ET, NBC/Peacock)

Last Result: Blue-Gold Game - Blue 41, Gold 40 (Sat Apr 25)

🏀Women's Basketball

No news to report! Here's recent information in case you missed a previous newsletter:

Hannah Hidalgo is back. The reigning Naismith Defensive Player of the Year and Nancy Lieberman Award winner (best point guard in the country) returns for another year - last season she averaged roughly 24 / 5 / 5 / 4-plus and broke the NCAA single-season steals record. Around her: an incoming class ESPN ranks No. 5 nationally, headlined by McDonald's All-Americans Jacy Abii and Jenica Lewis. Niele Ivey is leading Team USA's U18 squad at the FIBA AmeriCup June 8-14 in Mexico. The 2026-27 opener is the Eternal City Tip-off in Rome, Nov. 1 on Fox.

Upcoming: Niele Ivey/U18 AmeriCup June 8-14; men's & women's open 2026-27 in Rome.

🔴Utah Utes

🏈Football

No news to report! Here's recent information in case you missed a previous newsletter:

The two storylines for Utah this stretch are both 2027 offensive line visits. Top-30 interior OL Gecova Doyal is in Salt Lake on his official visit next weekend (May 29-31) - finalists are Utah, UCLA, Oregon, and Washington. OL coach Jordan Gross gets the room there. The following weekend, 3-star OL Tye Kennedy (Mountain View HS, AZ) visits June 5; he announces July 1 among Cal, ASU, Michigan, Washington, Utah, and Minnesota. Utah has zero OL commitments in the 2027 class so far - these two weekends are the swing.

Upcoming:

  • May 29-31 - Gecova Doyal (top-30 OL) official visit
  • June 5 - Tye Kennedy (3-star OL) visit
  • Sept. 3 - vs. Idaho (season opener, Rice-Eccles)

🤸Gymnastics

No news to report! Here's recent information in case you missed a previous newsletter:

Utah finished 2026 ranked 10th nationally, missing the NCAA Championship by 0.125 at the Corvallis Regional Final - first time in 49 years the Red Rocks didn't make nationals. Avery Neff swept Big 12 Gymnast of the Year with conference-best NQS scores on vault (9.920), bars (9.935), beam (9.925) and all-around (39.630). Ana Padurariu won Big 12 Specialist of the Year. Coaching adds: Steve Arkell (USA National Team) joined as bars coach April 30; Olympic silver medalist Grace McCallum signed on as Student Assistant.

Upcoming: 2027 season opens January.

🌰Ohio State Buckeyes

Baseball - Season Over

Michigan 3, Ohio State 0 in the Big Ten Tournament elimination game. The Buckeyes - who had stayed alive Tuesday by beating Rutgers behind Pierce Herrenbruck's complete game - couldn't crack the Wolverines this time. Final regular-season-plus-postseason record sits at 29-23 overall, 18-12 in Big Ten play. Tournament run ends here.

🏈Football

A quieter news day, with the loudest item coming from above. Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti said all 18 conference members unanimously back a 24-team CFP - "deep commitment to 24 and the access." Worth noting that Ryan Day quickly tempered the OSU-specific framing: he's pro-expansion broadly but "debatable if a 24-team format benefits Ohio State." Day's read tracks: under a 24-team field, OSU's regular-season margin for error stops mattering as much, and that's been the program's structural edge.

A weirder one: Jaxon Smith-Njigba called out a "disrespectful" printing error on his NFL Offensive Player of the Year trophy - the engraving labeled it as a defensive honor. Not the kind of thing you usually get to fix in front of cameras.

On the recruiting side: CB Monsanna Torbert Jr. (who decommitted from Indiana this week) has OSU as the team to beat for his recruitment. And the David Gabriel-Georges (5-star RB) official visit is still on for May 29.

Upcoming:

  • May 29 - David Gabriel-Georges (5-star RB) official visit
  • Sept 5 - vs. Ball State (season opener)
  • Sept 12 - at Texas, 7:30 p.m. ABC
