☘️Notre Dame Sports

🏈Football - Torbert Books a June OV, Fakatou Weekend Starts Tomorrow

The new name on the board: Monsanna Torbert. The four-star 2027 CB from Cincinnati decommitted from Indiana over the weekend (he'd pledged back in January during the Hoosiers' national title run) and Notre Dame moved fast - he's set to take an OV in South Bend June 19-21, and that's the last visit on his calendar before he announces. Torbert is No. 139 overall on the 247 Composite, No. 16 CB, No. 6 player out of Ohio, with rankings that have spiked through the spring. Ohio State and Michigan are also hosting; Texas, Alabama, Florida State, Oklahoma and South Carolina are watching. Flipping a former Indiana pledge would be a real win for Mike Mickens.

Tomorrow is the day. 5-star DL Marcus Fakatou arrives in Columbus Friday for his OV (May 29-31), then heads to Georgia, Texas, and Oregon before closing in South Bend June 15-17. Both Wiltfong and Gorney still have predictions in for Ohio State - Fakatou recently told Rivals that OSU sits at the top of his list, with Larry Johnson the obvious factor. The closing slot has historically been Notre Dame's friend, but the predictions all point Columbus right now. Freeman gets one weekend to change it.

Quiet on the cycle otherwise. Jackson Vaughn's commitment from Monday is now public, the 2027 class sits at 18, and Julius Jones Jr.'s June 11-13 OV is still the next big visit on the calendar before his June 23 announcement.

Upcoming:

  • Fri-Sun May 29-31 - Marcus Fakatou (5-star DL) OV at Ohio State
  • June 11-13 - Julius Jones Jr. (WR, legacy) OV at Notre Dame
  • June 15-17 - Marcus Fakatou OV at Notre Dame
  • June 19-21 - Monsanna Torbert (CB, former Indiana commit) OV at Notre Dame
  • June 23 - Julius Jones Jr. commitment announcement
  • Sun Sep 6 - vs. Wisconsin, Shamrock Series at Lambeau Field (7:30 p.m. ET, NBC/Peacock)

Last Result: Blue-Gold Game - Blue 41, Gold 40 (Sat Apr 25).

πŸ₯Lacrosse

No news to report! Here's recent information in case you missed a previous newsletter:

Season closed Memorial Day at Scott Stadium in Charlottesville - Princeton 16, Notre Dame 9 in the NCAA Championship. The Irish jumped to a 3-0 lead inside the opening five minutes, then Princeton ripped off 11 unanswered to take the halftime lead and never gave it back. Princeton's seventh title, first since 2001. Will Angrick and Josh Yago led ND with two goals apiece. Kevin Corrigan's 38th season ends one win short of a third championship in four years. Junior defenseman Shawn Lyght (ACC Co-DPOY, Tewaaraton finalist) returns to anchor the reload. The 2026 schedule (already released last fall) features 11 games, five at Arlotta, and eight of 11 opponents ranked top-15 preseason.

Last Result: Lost 16-9 to No. 1 Princeton in NCAA Championship (Mon May 25).

πŸ€Women's Basketball

No news to report! Here's recent information in case you missed a previous newsletter:

Hidalgo's senior-year return locked in - she explained it to USA TODAY on May 19: "Notre Dame has just been a home for the past three years…the connections that I've built, the people that kind of surround me, I had no choice but to stay." She closes 2025-26 with the NCAA single-season steals record (202), a three-time Wooden Award All-American (program first), and the only DI player since 1999-00 to average 25+ pts / 5+ reb / 5+ ast / 5+ stl. The 2026 class is No. 5 nationally (McDonald's All-Americans Jacy Abii and Jenica Lewis); 2027 opened with 5-star PF Eve Long.

Upcoming: Niele Ivey leads Team USA U18 at FIBA AmeriCup June 8-14 (Mexico). 2026-27 season opens Nov. 1 at the Eternal City Tip-off in Rome (Fox/FS1).

πŸ”΄Utah Utes

🏈Football - Quiet Day, June 5 Weekend Still the Headline

Nothing fresh on the wire today - the recruiting machine is in the lull between the spring evaluation period and the June OV wave. Coordinator-level home visits earlier this week with 2027 DT commit Tiki Teeples (AZ) and LB target Cam Pettijohn still set the table for Memorial-weekend-after. Tye Kennedy, the OL who included Utah in his top six (with Michigan, Cal, Washington, Minnesota, Arizona State), is also in for the June 5 OV slate.

Minor offer-tracker movement: Utah is in on Hawaii's top player Satele, and Idaho-based pass catcher Leofatu Filipe picked up his second D1 offer from the Utes earlier in May. The June 12 OV from interior OL target Ben Rainwater (2027, 6'6"/280) is the next big one after Memorial weekend.

The summer focus is the same as it's been since spring closed: rebuild the OL and DL after losing two first-round NFL offensive linemen. That's Scalley's project until Sept. 3.

Upcoming:

  • June 5 - Tye Kennedy (OL, top-6), Tiki Teeples (DT commit), Cam Pettijohn (LB) OVs
  • June 12 - Ben Rainwater (2027 OL) OV
  • June 21 - Jag Ioane (DE) OV
  • Thu Sept 3 - vs. Idaho, Rice-Eccles (Scalley's HC debut)
  • Sept 12 - vs. Arkansas (Rice-Eccles)

🀸Gymnastics

No news to report! Here's recent information in case you missed a previous newsletter:

Deep offseason. Utah finished 2026 ranked 10th nationally, missing the NCAA Championship by 0.125 at the Corvallis Regional Final - ending the program's 49-year streak at nationals. Avery Neff took home the team MVP at the late-April banquet after sweeping Big 12 Gymnast of the Year (NQS leader on vault 9.920, bars 9.935, beam 9.925, AA 39.630) and finishing 7th AA / 4th floor at NCAAs as an individual qualifier. Bars coach Steve Arkell (USA National Team) joined in April; Olympic silver medalist Grace McCallum is now Student Assistant. Carly Dockendorf is extended through 2031. The coaching staff has framed the 2026 finish as "refinement moving forward" and "turning rejection into redirection" - the early read on 2027 has Neff as centerpiece with a championship-track team around her.

Upcoming: 2027 season opens January.

🌰Ohio State Buckeyes

🏈Football - Fakatou Weekend Begins, Kickoff Times Set

Tomorrow Fakatou lands in Columbus. The most-watched 2027 DL recruit in the country arrives Friday for a three-day OV (May 29-31). Wiltfong and Gorney's predictions for him to land at Ohio State are both still up; Fakatou recently told Rivals the Buckeyes are "No. 1" on his list. The Larry Johnson factor is real - Fakatou has consistently pointed to development under Johnson as the differentiator - and a coming-out-of-the-weekend verbal would functionally close the race before Notre Dame's June 15-17 closing shot. 2027 RB David Gabriel-Georges is also in town this weekend for his OV.

Kickoff times locked. The Big Ten and Pac-12 confirmed yesterday that Sept. 5 vs. Ball State opens at 12:30 p.m. on BTN, and Sept. 19 vs. Kent State is a noon FOX game. Ohio State opens as a 49.5-point favorite over Ball State per DraftKings. The bigger one, Sept. 12 at Texas, remains 7:30 p.m. ABC.

Quiet around the program otherwise. No new 2027 commits since Prince Goldsby (LB) and Wyatt Smith (EDGE) pulled the trigger last week. Silver sleeve stripes are officially back on the home and away uniforms, and the new turf install at Ohio Stadium is underway for the fall.

Upcoming:

  • Fri-Sun May 29-31 - Marcus Fakatou (5-star DL) + David Gabriel-Georges (RB) OVs
  • Sept 5 - vs. Ball State (12:30 p.m., BTN)
  • Sept 12 - at Texas (7:30 p.m., ABC)
  • Sept 19 - vs. Kent State (noon, FOX)

🍽️Food & Drink

Deli George is back. The 1997-era Fairview deli has reopened at 1114 W. Front St. (the former Woodland Empire Ale Craft building) - a real Boise-classic restoration if you're in the mood for a downtown lunch. The Terrace Drive-In announced it'll have outdoor showings for the 2026 season under new management, opening in July - a piece of Boise nostalgia that looked like it might be gone.

The late-May openings calendar still leads with Eagle: The STIL + Bumble Coffee at 101 E. Riverside Dr. (former Negranti Creamery space) and Vessel Kitchen at 55 E. State St. in the Hemingway Building (Utah-based protein bowls - their first Idaho store). The Descanso on the Greenbelt patio opened May 22 at The Boardwalk (521 E. 41st St., Garden City) - spritzes, beer, wine, the river - that's the Memorial-weekend evening play if you're looking for one.
