☘️Notre Dame Sports

🏈Football - Vaughn Picks Notre Dame, Fakatou Weekend Starts Friday

Vaughn is in. Jackson Vaughn made it official last night, committing to Notre Dame over Auburn, LSU, Miami, and South Carolina. The 6-4, 225 EDGE from Bergen Catholic (NJ) becomes Notre Dame's 18th 2027 commit and the fourth defensive line piece of the class - joining Aidan O'Neil, David Folorunsho, and Richie Flanagan. In his announcement, Vaughn said "the combination of elite academics, player development, culture, and the relationships I built with the coaching staff" was what set the Irish apart. He'll enroll in January.

The downstream play matters as much as the commit. Vaughn has publicly said he plans to help recruit 5-star DL Marcus Fakatou - they're close friends - and that quiet peer recruiting is exactly the kind of thing that can move a margin-of-error decision. Which matters, because Fakatou's first official visit is this weekend in Columbus (May 29-31), and Wiltfong and Gorney both still have their predictions pointing Ohio State. Larry Johnson is the gravitational pull there. Notre Dame closes the OV cycle June 15-17.

Around the cycle. Julius Jones Jr. (WR, legacy, No. 72 overall) is locked into his June 11-13 OV with a decision date now firm for June 23 - Notre Dame, Oregon, Miami the finalists, ND the leader. Champ Monds (the 2027 QB who committed in April) has officially shut down his recruitment: "I don't have to worry about recruiting anymore. I'm locked in with Coach Gino and Coach Freeman." The 2027 class is rounding into one of the deepest classes Freeman has put together.

Upcoming:

  • May 29-31 - Marcus Fakatou (5-star DL) OV at Ohio State
  • June 11-13 - Julius Jones Jr. (WR, legacy) OV at Notre Dame
  • June 15-17 - Marcus Fakatou OV at Notre Dame
  • June 23 - Julius Jones Jr. commitment announcement
  • Sun Sep 6 - vs. Wisconsin, Shamrock Series at Lambeau Field (7:30 p.m. ET, NBC/Peacock)

Last Result: Blue-Gold Game - Blue 41, Gold 40 (Sat Apr 25).

🥍Lacrosse

No news to report! Here's recent information in case you missed a previous newsletter:

Season closed Monday at Scott Stadium in Charlottesville - Princeton 16, Notre Dame 9 in the NCAA Championship. Notre Dame jumped to a 3-0 lead in the opening five minutes, then Princeton ripped off 11 unanswered to take a halftime lead the Irish never reeled back in. Chad Palumbo had four (all in the first half), Colin Burns added a hat trick for the Tigers. Will Angrick and Josh Yago led ND with two goals apiece. Princeton claims its seventh title and first since 2001; the Irish finish a year short of a third championship in four seasons. Kevin Corrigan's 38th season ends with the reload starting now - junior defenseman Shawn Lyght (ACC Co-DPOY, Tewaaraton finalist) anchors a returning core.

Last Result: Lost 16-9 to No. 1 Princeton in NCAA Championship (Mon May 25).

🏀Women's Basketball

No news to report! Here's recent information in case you missed a previous newsletter:

Hidalgo's return for her senior year is locked in - she explained the call to USA TODAY on May 19: "Notre Dame has just been a home for the past three years…the connections that I've built, the people that kind of surround me, I had no choice but to stay." She finishes 2025-26 with the NCAA single-season steals record (202), a three-time Wooden Award All-American (program first), and the only DI player since 1999-00 to average 25+ pts / 5+ reb / 5+ ast / 5+ stl across a season. The 2026 class is No. 5 nationally (McDonald's All-Americans Jacy Abii and Jenica Lewis); 2027 opened with 5-star PF Eve Long.

Upcoming: Niele Ivey leads Team USA U18 at FIBA AmeriCup June 8-14 (Mexico). 2026-27 season opens Nov. 1 at the Eternal City Tip-off in Rome (Fox/FS1).

🔴Utah Utes

🏈Football - Teeples Home Visit, OV Weekend Setting Up

Defensive coordinator Colton Swan ran point this week. Home visit with 2027 DT commit Tiki Teeples (AZ) - Teeples will OV June 5 to formalize the visit side. Swan also worked LB target Cam Pettijohn, who's added offers from Auburn, Florida State, Colorado, and Missouri since his last update; he's also on the June 5 OV slate. Safety coach Derrick Odum visited Illinois safety target James Johnson, who's visiting Utah next weekend.

The June 5 weekend is shaping up to be the headline. Confirmed OVs: OL Tye Kennedy (Utah made his top six along with Michigan, Cal, Washington, Minnesota, Arizona State), DT Tiki Teeples (commit, locking in), LB Cam Pettijohn, and a handful of others. That's the weekend to watch - Memorial weekend itself is quieter than the previous briefing suggested. (I'd had Gecova Doyal as a Memorial-weekend OV; current Utah-focused recruiting reporting doesn't confirm that date, so treat that one as floating until a 247/On3 update lands.)

Roster note: Kicker Tanner Cragun committed to Utah for 2026 after one year at UTEP - special teams added depth without burning a HS scholarship.

Upcoming:

  • June 5 - Tye Kennedy (OL, top-6), Tiki Teeples (DT commit), Cam Pettijohn (LB) OVs
  • June 12 - Ben Rainwater (2027 OL) OV
  • June 21 - Jag Ioane (DE) OV
  • Thu Sept 3 - vs. Idaho, Rice-Eccles (Scalley's HC debut)
  • Sept 12 - vs. Arkansas (Rice-Eccles)

🤸Gymnastics

No news to report! Here's recent information in case you missed a previous newsletter:

Deep offseason. Utah finished 2026 ranked 10th nationally, missing the NCAA Championship by 0.125 at the Corvallis Regional Final - ending the program's 49-year streak at nationals. Avery Neff swept Big 12 Gymnast of the Year (NQS leader on vault 9.920, bars 9.935, beam 9.925, AA 39.630) and finished 7th AA, 4th floor at NCAAs as an individual qualifier. Bars coach Steve Arkell (USA National Team) joined in April; Olympic silver medalist Grace McCallum is now Student Assistant. Carly Dockendorf is extended through 2031. The early read on 2027: Neff as centerpiece, the freshman class through the learning curve, talent in place for a championship-track season.

Upcoming: 2027 season opens January.

🌰Ohio State Buckeyes

🏈Football - Fakatou + Gabriel-Georges Weekend, Two More 2027 Commits

This is the weekend. 5-star DL Marcus Fakatou and 2027 RB David Gabriel-Georges are both in Columbus May 29-31 for official visits. Wiltfong and Gorney both have predictions in for Fakatou to OSU; the prospect told Rivals that Ohio State sits at the top of his list. Landing a verbal coming out of Memorial weekend would functionally close the most-watched 2027 DL race before the June 15-17 Notre Dame visit. The Larry Johnson factor - and Fakatou's standing comments about being "developed by Coach Johnson" - is the through-line.

Two new 2027 commits since the last briefing. Missouri 4-star Prince Goldsby (No. 7 LB, No. 101 overall) and 4-star EDGE Wyatt Smith (No. 11 edge, No. 78 overall) both pulled the trigger on the Buckeyes - that's a real defensive haul stacking up alongside the May 29 OV visit slate. On the transfer side, former Dartmouth OL Vasean Washington committed for 2026 depth in the OL room.

Staff: Ryan Day and GM Mark Pantoni are expected to finalize Kylie Green to the recruiting staff (replacing Murphy) before summer camp.

Upcoming:

  • May 29-31 - Marcus Fakatou (5-star DL) + David Gabriel-Georges (RB) OVs
  • Sept 5 - vs. Ball State (season opener)
  • Sept 12 - at Texas, 7:30 p.m. ABC
